Sometimes when I don’t think I can get my thoughts out the way I want to, I write poems. It’s a way to express myself in a more concise way, without overthinking. These poems help move something from inside of me to the outside world, which is liberating in a way.
The poem structure I’ve used in this blog (see previous posts and I’m sure my future posts will have them too) is the cinquain, which is a five-line, unrhymed poem with the following number of syllables per line:
1st line = two syllables
2nd line = four syllables
3rd line = six syllables
4th line = eight syllables
5th line = two syllables
They are usually written with iambs: “a two-syllable metrical pattern in poetry in which one unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed syllable” per LitCharts. I’m very amateur at this so I don’t neccessarliy follow this pattern.
In the future I’ll be exploring more poetic forms because I’ve always enjoyed poetry and I have an interest in learning more. If you happen upon this page and you’re experimenting with writing poetry too, reach out! I’ve love to connect and support each other.
